ART EXHIBITION

On the 28thApril, 2019, the Centre held her first Special Needs Art Exhibition for individuals living with autism, and other developmental disorders. The programme was held at Omenka Gallery, 24, Ikoyi Cresent, off Osborne Road Ikoyi Lagos, and it started at 2pm.

The programme was hosted by Mrs DotunAkande, the Director, and anchored by Mrs Essien, the Administrator. Mrs Essien explained the reason for the gathering, and this was followed by a short speech by the Director. Mrs Akande spoke on the hidden talents, and gifts embedded in the lives of our children, especially in the field of art, and that the programme will be able to keep parents in tune with their children’s ability. She also stated that part of the funds realized from the exhibition will be given to parents whose children’s works were exhibited and bought, and the remaining proceeds will be for the Centre. Our amiable Director also called upon one of the art consultants, Mrs Soyinka, who worked directly with the children and adults in the area of pottery, to share her personal experience with the audience in the course of working with them.

Mr Oliver Enwonwu, The National President Society of Nigerian Artist who was our Special Guest of Honour, was appreciated for his support and presence amidst his tight schedule. He mentioned that he will always be willing to give his support at any point in time, and that he was very proud to associate with the children. The Chairman of the event Mr Idowu Sonaya, who is the Lagos State Chapter Chairman, Society of Nigerian Artists, was also called upon to give a brief speech, and he was able to share his experience with one of his students in the regular school who was a special needs child. He also appreciated and commended our efforts as regards working with individuals with developmental disabilities.

Mrs Adeyinka, who was one of our parents declared the event opened, and thirty- seven participants were present at the event.
